It is essential in the communications industry to show off your work, whether that’s in a portfolio, website, or another platform, it’s crucial to ensure you show your best work. Making a demo reel, website, or portfolio can be stressful, but following some advice can help as you go along the process of making one of these.

Early in the year, Ed2010 had guest speaker, Grace Campbell, come in and speak with us. Campbell, a creative strategist at Condé Nast, discussed the importance of marketing yourself and how you can improve.

Use LinkedIn as an Advantage

Finding all of your work and putting it all in one place can be difficult to have, especially as you get more experience over the years.

Campbell recommends tracking your work using LinkedIn. Not only will all your experience be in one place for yourself, but will be available for employers to view more in depth. She also recommends using all the tools you have to your advantage, including private messaging and different posting types. You want to be the one to show up in the search engine, so use that to your advantage.

Words Can’t Show All Your Skill

Make sure you are never just telling people about your work. An employer will be able to understand your skill on a deeper level if they see the work you do, not just “hear” about that work. When creating your portfolio or website, put the best of that work out in the visual element you have.

Don’t Limit What You Include

Campbell gave an interesting account about how things such as high school projects were something she used to fill up her website, and something she also used to talk about in her interviews. As long as it is something you are proud of, it is worth it to include in your personal branding.

Include Key Words for the Job You Want

Most people have a dream job, and pursuing that dream job can be made easier using research. If you look at a job application you want, there will be a description of that job. Use the key job descriptions and words to lift your portfolio to a higher level. If you fulfill those description requirements, the more likely you can make it to that interview step.

Talk About Extracurriculars Like They’re Jobs

If you’re putting in the work, it deserves to go into that personal marketing. Could be as simple as work as PR Chair for a personal organization, or a team lead for a communications club, if it includes some of your best work, treat it like a job!
