The Biggest Moments From the 2026 VMAs

By Chasalee Romero
The MTV Video Music Awards have always been known for moments that go beyond who takes home a Moon Person. From unexpected performances to major career milestones, the VMAs work best when they give people something to talk about afterward. The 2026 ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg on Sept. 27, had plenty of those moments.
One of the biggest came before the show had even really gotten started: Madonna returning to the VMA stage for the first time in 23 years.
Considering how connected Madonna is to the history of the VMAs, her return felt significant. Her 1984 performance of “Like a Virgin” remains one of the most recognizable moments in the show’s history, and her last VMA performance came in 2003 alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
This time, Madonna brought two different generations of pop together. Sabrina Carpenter joined her for “Bring Your Love,” followed by Charli xcx during “Danceteria.” The performance also included appearances from figures connected to Madonna’s career alongside some unexpected guests. Rather than simply recreating one of her older performances, Madonna used the moment to reference her past while surrounding herself with artists who are currently defining pop music. Rolling Stone called it one of the great performances in VMA history.
Madonna’s night did not stop there. She went on to win seven awards, including Artist of the Year. More than four decades after appearing at the first VMAs, she somehow ended up being one of the biggest stories of the 2026 ceremony too.
Taylor Swift also made VMA history.
Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” a win that helped make her the most-awarded artist in VMA history. She also received the first Artist Director Honors award, recognizing the role she has taken in directing and developing her own music videos.
Her Video of the Year speech also became one of the more emotional moments of the night when she dedicated the award to Dolly Parton, who died earlier this year. Swift described Parton’s influence as both a songwriter and performer before connecting that legacy back to her own work. Later, she premiered her new “Patient Zero” music video, starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
The night continued honoring Parton with Kacey Musgraves’ performance of “I Will Always Love You.” Instead of turning the tribute into a massive production, Musgraves kept it simple, performing with a pianist as images honoring Parton appeared around her. In a show usually built around elaborate staging and spectacle, the quieter approach made the tribute stand out even more.
Another memorable tribute came when several artists came together to celebrate George Michael. RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims, Adam Lambert, MNEK and others performed songs from throughout his career, including “Faith,” “Father Figure,” “Careless Whisper” and “Freedom! ’90.” Sombr even wore one of Michael’s original custom leather jackets during the tribute.
The VMAs also celebrated another major piece of music history by giving Nirvana the Video Vanguard Award. Surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted the award in honor of the band and Kurt Cobain. It was one of the clearest examples of how heavily the 2026 ceremony leaned into MTV’s past, especially with Snoop Dogg hosting and Madonna returning to perform.
Not every memorable moment belonged to an established icon, though.
LISA had one of the night’s biggest individual moments, winning Best Pop for “Dream” before later taking the stage to perform. Sienna Spiro also had a breakthrough night, performing “Great Expectations” and later winning Best New Artist. RAYE delivered another standout performance with “I Will Overcome” and “Where Is My Husband!,” showing exactly why she has become one of the most watched vocalists in pop.
Even the red carpet gave people something to talk about. Taylor Swift arrived in Tamara Ralph Couture with a sheer black bodice and shimmering skirt, while LISA wore a red corseted Attico dress with a dramatic fur coat. Teyana Taylor also stood out in a feather-trimmed Zuhair Murad gown.
The 2026 VMAs ended up feeling like a meeting point between different eras of music. Madonna returned to the stage that helped turn her into a pop-culture icon, Taylor Swift reached another career milestone, newer artists had their own breakthrough moments and legends like Dolly Parton, George Michael and Nirvana were remembered throughout the night.
That mix is what made the ceremony memorable. The VMAs have never really been about remembering every winner. They are about the performances, surprises and moments that people are still discussing after the awards are over. And this year gave people more than a few.
