A quick five-minute scroll through TikTok or Instagram will make one thing very clear: the most engaging content doesn’t look “perfect” anymore. Instead of highly edited visuals and heavily scripted messages, audiences are now drawn to shaky camera angles, casual speaking and behind-the-scenes moments. What used to be considered unprofessional is now outperforming said traditional, polished branding.
So what changed, and what does this mean for PR and media?
The Shift from Perfection to Authenticity
For years, brands focused on creating flawless content. Every post was carefully curated; every caption reviewed countless times and every image edited to eerie perfection. But today's audiences, especially Gen Z, value something different: authenticity.
People want to feel like they are seeing real experiences, not advertisements. Content that feels raw and unscripted builds trust more easily and faster than anything overly produced.
Why Does “Unpolished” Work?
There are a few key reasons why this shift is happening.
Content feels more relatable. Unpolished content mirrors how people actually communicate. It feels human, not corporate. People want to feel like they are taking recommendations from a friend, not being dictated what to buy by a company.
It builds trust. When brands show imperfections or behind-the-scenes moments, they appear more transparent, honest and relatable.
It matches platform culture. Platforms like TikTok prioritize content that feels organic. Highly polished content often performs worse because it looks like an ad.
What does this mean for PR and Media?
This shift has entirely changed how communication strategies are built. PR is no longer just about controlling a message; it's about connecting with an audience in a genuine way.
For students and future professionals, this means adding learning how to create content that feels natural, understanding platform-specific trends and balancing professionalism with authenticity to the skill set needed to thrive in this industry.
Keeping the balance
While unpolished content is powerful and innovative, it does not mean strategy disappears entirely. The most effective content still has a clear message, a defined audience and intentional storytelling. It's able to feel effortless, even when it really isn't
Perfect branding is by no means going extinct, but it has moved away from being the standard. It the modern media landscape, authenticity is what captures and keeps attention while maintaining lasting connections between consumers and businesses.
Anyone established in or entering the media industry will soon learn that challenges don't just lie in content creation, but in the creation of content that feels real, and sometimes that means putting perfection to the side.
