Spring is definitely the best season for reading. After all, when the sun is shining and there's a slight breeze in the air, there's no better way to spend a day than outside with a book in hand, soaking up the good weather while staying entertained. Additionally, there are so many books out there that just fit the "vibe" of spring with refreshing moods perfect for the season of renewal. If you're interested in starting on a bookish journey this spring but simply don't know what book to choose, here's a list of three of them to get you started.
"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde
Would you rather be immortal or virtuous? A scenario that sounds like it would only be pondered on an episode of "What Would You Do?" is the problem the protagonist faces in "The Picture of Dorian Gray." The novel follows a young man (Dorian Gray) who is as vain as they come. As the story progresses, Gray commits multiple heinous acts, all because of his obsession with beauty, eventually leading to his own fall from grace. Although this may sound a bit macabre for the delicate months of spring, this story really is all about transformation and has beautiful depictions of floral scenery that will catch your eye.
2. "The Hobbit" by J.R.R Tolkien
An epic journey full of adventure, the promise of riches waiting at the finish line and the chance of a lifetime are phrases that are probably music to the ears of a daring person. However, homebody Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of "The Hobbit," would certainly disagree. Bilbo is thrown into a dangerous quest that leads to treasure and his own self-discovery. Even though all Bilbo really wants is to live a mundane life, his quest transforms him for the better and helps him uncover parts of himself that he never would have discovered otherwise. This novel considers themes of friendship as well as doing what’s right in the face of danger and is the perfect read for those who want to explore what's out there this spring.
4. "Emma" by Jane Austen
Written in 1815, "Emma" describes the pursuits of Emma Woodhouse who paints many portraits. Even though her masterpieces often depict friends and family members, a lot of the time the paintings show a warped perception of them. This is because Emma paints her friends and family as who she views them as, not who they are in reality. This novel is a hilarious read and showcases the importance of letting people be themselves, making it a wonderful springtime book club read for you and your friends.
Starting a new book is one of the best feelings, and, as we call wait for summer to come around, books can provide some much-needed reprieve from our daily lives. Happy reading!
