Summer internships are the hot topic among college students right now. We all know the Spring semester chaos of applying, interviewing and stressing over landing that dream opportunity to boost your resume and gain real-world experience.

But now that you’ve secured the role, there’s one big question left: What are we wearing?! Balancing professionalism with staying cool in the summer heat can feel like a challenge, but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Let’s talk Summer internship fashion!

1. Start With the Basics

You can never go wrong with a great pair of tailored trousers, a cool short-sleeved mock neck, or a midi-length pencil skirt. Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are your best friends in the summer. They’ll help you stay cool while still looking presentable. Wrinkle-resistance is always a plus: Who has time for ironing at 9 a.m.?

2. Layers Are Essential

Even if it's 80 degrees outside, offices always seem to be freezing thanks to air conditioning. Keep a cardigan, light blazer, or oversized button-up at your desk or in your tote. Not only will it elevate your outfit, but it’ll also keep you from doing more shivering than work. Wrapping the cardigan around your shoulders is another simple way to add something simple but fashionable to your look.

3. Footwear That Works Overtime

Closed-toe flats are a perfect balance between comfort and class. Kitten-heels have also been on the rise in the fashion world and would be the perfect addition to your look. A shorter heel now can save you the pain later.

4. Add Personality Through Accessories

Internships are a great time to show off your style and make yourself stand out. Don’t be afraid to show some personality through jewelry or a fun bag. Just remember to learn the culture of the company and their expectations when it comes to dress code. When in doubt, ask your supervisor or look at what other employees wear.

5. Don’t Forget the Commute

If you’re taking public transportation or walking to work, help your future self and make smart choices about your outfit. Consider bringing a tote with your office shoes and wearing comfy sneakers for the commute. And if there’s room, slip a Tide pen in there as well. Just in case.

Internship fashion doesn’t have to be boring or uncomfortable. Dressing to impress is important, but don’t be afraid to let your personality shine. With a few basics and styling tricks, you can stay cool and still make a fashion statement that is pin worthy. Now that you know what to wear, you are ready to take on the office this summer!
