This past weekend, the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State came alive with energy, emotion and purpose that only THON can bring. For 46 hours straight, from 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, thousands of students, families, volunteers and supporters stood together For The Kids. There was dancing, cheering and fundraising, all in support of childhood cancer.
A New Record
The highlight of THON 2026 came during the final reveal. This year's total reached an astonishing $18,841,726.53, setting a new fundraising record by more than $1 million over last year's total.
This figure represents the culmination of countless hours of fundraising, organizing and community support from more than 16,000 student volunteers, alumni and Penn Staters worldwide. THON also saw nearly 700 dancers who pledged to remain on their feet throughout the entire marathon, showing a true encapsulation of the resilience and spirit of the cause.
Highlights Of the Weekend:
THON is not just about the numbers; it's about the people and experiences that make the event unforgettable. Here are some standout moments from THON 2026:
A Strong Start:
As soon as the block hit 6 p.m. on Friday, the energy in the Bryce Jordan Center was electric. Dancers and volunteers flooded the floor, ready for rounds of line dances, performances, music, games and community celebration designed to keep spirits high through fatigue and long hours.
“Fitz and The Tantrums”:
One of the highlights of every THON is the National Act performance. The performance happened in the early hours of THON Friday night and was rightfully one of the big moments of the weekend. The band is known for their infectious and high-energy stage performance. The band definitely brought a boost when dancers needed it. Besides a few controversial comments relating to the time (a big no for inside the BJC when a majority of dancers do not want to know the time), the performance was definitely a hit.
Pep Rally:
If there is one moment that defines Saturday night at THON, it's the Pep Rally. Penn State athletic teams storm the stage with choreographed routines, costumes and enthusiasm. This year's Pep Rally was hosted by former Penn State football player Juwan Johnson and his wife, Chanen Johnson, a former gymnast for the Nittany Lions.
This year's title winner was the Nittany Lions Men's Soccer team, who stole the show with a routine that was equally hilarious and impressive.
The Pep Rally is a needed source of entertainment and hype in the midst of the weekend, but it's also a tradition. It's a reminder that every corner of Penn State, including athletes, dancers and volunteers, rallies together FTK.
“Go Go Gadget”:
No THON weekend would be complete without the iconic “Go Go Gadget.” Within the final hour of the weekend, it's easy to succumb to the pain and exhaustion, but as soon as those opening notes hit, all that misery disappears. Energy is at an all-time high as everyone sings along to throwback songs.
For first-time THON participants, it's a rite of passage. For seniors, it's pure nostalgia. “Go Go Gadget” is more than just a band, it's shared history. It connects all THON participants through a simple, joyful tradition that echoes through the BJC year after year.
THON’s Legacy:
Since it began in 1973, THON has grown into the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raising millions of dollars to support families and children battling pediatric cancer. Thanks to events like Penn State’s Dance Marathon, the total raised for Four Diamonds at Penn State's Health Golisano Children's Hospital continues to grow year after year.
But beyond just dollar amounts, THON’s impact lies in the emotional support, hope and relationships it fosters between everyone involved. For many, THON is not just an event, it's a life-changing tradition that inspires a lifelong commitment For The Kids.
Looking Ahead:
With every record broken and every person inspired, THON continues to march forward, bringing renewed energy and even bigger dreams for the future. As THON 2026 has now officially come to an end, the joy and shared determination remain long after the confetti settles and lights dim at the BJC. THON 2026 once again proved this event is about more than just staying on your feet for 46 hours, it's about joy in the face of hardship, commitment and community.
